Sinar Harian Coming To Pahang?

I saw banners advertising a (supposedly new) newspaper this morning that reads, “Sinar Harian, suara sebenar Orang Pahang”. It also has a tagline of “Lokal & Neutral” which means “Local & Neutral”. Does that mean some (if any) other newspapers are biased? Curious, I head over to the nearest newspaper stand to get myself a copy.

I left in disappointment when I was told by the man that the newspaper will only be sold in Kuantan on the 17th or 18th June 2007. I can’t confirm this though.

I did some searching and found the Sinar Harian website. According to mSTAR online, Sinar Harian focuses on the east coast news. Kelantan and Terengganu already have their copy for some time now. I wonder what took Pahang so long to get one of their own. I will grab a copy of the newspaper as soon as I can get my hands on one of them.

Their website is only available for the Kelantan edition. There are only a few full text articles in it. Others are one paragraph summary of the news, something that I’m not too fond with. If you are interested to read their news online, you can subscribe to their digital version.

Shahira: New Perfume That Lasts 3 Days?

I went to Giant to buy some groceries today. While I was doing my shopping, an advertisement over the PA system caught my attention. The advertisement was promoting a perfume branded “Shahira” (not sure if that’s the spelling).

The perfume is supposed to be made from natural extract. The advertisement also mentioned that it can help prevent body odour. However, the main “strength” of this perfume is that the scent of the perfume can lasts up to 3 days!

I don’t understand why anyone would need a perfume that lasts up to 3 days after application. Is the world becoming so technology advanced that humans no longer need to shower to prevent body odour and for hygiene purpose?

Now, imagine your boyfriend skipping the shower after a game of football and chooses to spray himself with “Shahira” instead.

Need a hug anyone?

Scam: Are You The Next Victim?

Search for the term “scam” in The Star’s website and you will notice that there is at least one article about scam every week. There are 7 articles regarding scam in the past week alone.

This is a reminder than scams are happening around us all the time. Some may have even experienced others trying to scam you. There will be a next victim of scam, just make sure you are not the one.

Article 1: Man falls prey to HK scam

This scam happened using the same technique I highlighted over a month ago at TenthOfMarch.com. The victim was informed that he has won a big sum of money. He was later asked to deposit a sum of money into a bank account for some overseas trust insurance, which he did.

After losing RM3,460, he later received a second phone call asking him to deposit an extra RM8,000 for processing fees. Only then did he realize he was cheated.

Article 2: Beware of the court con

This technique is said to have been originated from Penang and had spread to Johor and other states. From the report, it is stated that “the police have received more than 100 reports of the scam in the Klang Valley”.

Blogger Jee has first hand experience of this scam a few weeks ago. According to the report, the victim received a phone call from the “Malaysian High Court” and was said to have missed a court hearing. In order to “settle the problem”, the victim is required to hand over his name, identity card number, bank account number and current bank balance.

Article 3: Young bank card holders sucked into scam

The victim rented his ATM card to a stranger for RM150 a month. Little did he know that his bank account would be used to scam other victims. After being tracked by one of the victims, he seek help from the Cheras MCA office.

Scams have been around for many generations. It will still be around for many generations to come. The question is, “Are you the next victim?” *touch wood*

My “New” Toy: Nikon F-401x

I make it no secret that I have always dreamt of owning a DSLR one day. The thought of taking photos with a DSLR somehow looks and feels more … “professional”. However, the outcome of the photos are no guarantee. ;-)

About a week ago, I received (or rather “inherited”) a new toy — the Nikon F-401x. It looks quite “OK”, right? It’s big, heavy and black. There are buttons all over the place, most of which I don’t know the function (YET).

If you take a closer look at the photo below, you can see that there are dusts in the lens. I wonder if that will affect the quality of the photo taken. Should I send it to the shop for some servicing? I wonder how much it will cost.

This is the back view of the camera. One word — UGLY! It’s not ugly because it’s ugly but rather…where is the LCD screen? Oh yeah, if you haven’t already know, this Nikon F-401x is a SLR, not a DSLR. Hence, there is no LCD, it runs on 4 AA batteries and photos are “saved” on camera films instead of memory sticks.

I’m really enthusiastic to experiment with this new toy but there is one thing holding me back. That is the cost to experiment with it. A 24 roll film costs me RM11.50 while developing them will cost me another RM14.50. That means every photo I take will cost me slightly more than RM1!

I’ll be attending my cousin’s wedding next month. Therefore, I need to play around with the Nikon F-401x to see how the photos develop. I’ll be bringing my Panasonic DMC-FZ3 along as a backup.

If I manage to hide the “back” of the camera from public eyes, people might think I’m using a DLSR. Heck, some might even be jealous of me! Hahahahaha.

Malaysia, Make Up Your Mind Already!

At first it was 100. Then it became 50. Now it is 0.

At first it was Bahasa Malaysia. Then it became Bahasa Melayu. Now it is back to Bahasa Malaysia.

Make up your damn mind already! This Back to Bahasa Malaysia change is so unnecessary. Why was it changed in the first place anyway? Will it be changed to Bahasa Melayu again in the year 2020? Why not just change it to Bahasa Melaysia once and for all?

Quoting Datuk Seri Zainuddin Maidin from The Star:

The Malays, for example, must not see Bahasa Malaysia as a language used (solely) by themselves.

Similarly, non-Malays would also not see the language as a Malay language but a language that belongs to them.

I don’t know what the other Malaysians think about that remark. As for me, I have never thought that a language belongs to a certain race only — be it others, Indian, Chinese or Malay (I’m reversing the order because it has always been “in order”).

Why the fuss over “what” belongs to “who”? Aren’t we a big mixed up “family” called Malaysian?

Examples:

Some others, Indian and Malay families are sending their children to Chinese schools. Some others, Indians and Malays are using chopsticks. Some Chinese eat with hand/fingers.

Note: ALL = Others, Indian, Chinese or Malay.

Others eat [ALL - others] foods. Indian eats [ALL - Indian] foods. Chinese eats [ALL - Chinese] foods. Malay eats [ALL - Malay] foods.

Others wear [ALL - others] traditional clothes. Indian wears [ALL - Indian] traditional clothes. Chinese wears [ALL - Chinese] traditional clothes. Malay wears [ALL - Malay] traditional clothes.

Ok, I think you know where I am going with this. The national language being called Bahasa Malaysia or Bahasa Melalyu doesn’t make or break the unity of Malaysians. It is the group of people with the mindset that thinks that it will or won’t break it that (might) break it. I am not sure if you understood what I meant because I am not sure if I do understand it myself.

Again, why the fuss over Bahasa Malaysia or Bahasa Melayu? The only time when I really cared in the past and will care in the future are during times like these:

Correct answer -- Bahasa Malaysia

Wrong answer -- Bahasa Melayu

Now, none of us wants our kids to get spanked for something as silly as this, do we? If my kid were to get into this situation one day (and if he/she has a hot lady teacher), I wouldn’t mind taking their place.

“Spank me (instead), teacher!”
