Blogathon For Charity And I

What is Blogathon?

Blogathon is an effort by Cat Connor and Sheana Director to organize an event where bloggers pledge their time (24 hours) to blog for charity. The bloggers are required to update their blogs every 30 minutes for 24 hours starting 28th July 2007 at 6am PST. That is 28th July 2007 at 10pm 9pm Malaysian time (if I’m not mistaken).

All donations will go directly to the charity. Neither the blogger nor blogathon.org will ever handle the funds. Each blogger gets to select their own organization to blog for. According to their FAQ:

Any you like! Online donations must be available, with the exceptions of charities based in Malaysia. If the charity you have in mind does not accept online donations, you will have to pick another charity.

I’ve been contemplating to join or not to join for a few days now. It will definitely be a challenge for me, to stay up 24 hours and update my blog every 30 minutes. Staying up is one problem but the biggest problem for me is to think of ideas for 49 posts and to finish each post in 30 minutes.

I’ve read some place that the dateline for blogger registration is on the 21st July. I’m not sure if I’m too late for it but I’ve just registered myself. I’ve sent an email to them. Let’s see how things go.

*fingers crossed*

15 Year Old Girl Had Sex 300 Times

There is this talk show, The Maury Show that once invited a mother and her troubled teenage daughter to the show. It was then exposed that the teenager had had unprotected sex over 300 times with 15 different men. She even bragged about having sex in a public place over 100 times at the school, park, mall, playground and staircase.

Her mission — to have a baby.

From the video, it is evident that she has no idea what she is getting herself into. Sexually transmitted diseases do not worry her. She doesn’t care what others think/talk about her. Heck, she has even called herself a sl*t. Well, not forgetting that she’s one damn annoying kid. I’d say she needed a good slap on the face.

She probably thinks that having a baby is no different from playing with a barbie doll. According to her, she has pacifiers, clothes, books, blankets and nothing else that she can’t steal for the baby. I wonder if she might just dump the baby into the trash after getting sick and tired of it.

Having said that, I feel that the worst individual in this whole episode isn’t the troubled teenager herself, rather the talk show producers and even the mother! It is a fact that the teenager needs help but what’s the point in “displaying” her to the world on a talk show? Get her professional help you idiots!

I can’t help but to think the whole show is nothing but an act. At least I hope it is. Or else the mother should get some professional help herself after sending her teenage daughter there. I don’t blame the show producers for hyping the whole ordeal — it does increase TV rating and the show “is often accused by critics of exploiting dysfunctional families and minorities” — but what does the mother expect out of the show? Public sympathy?

I don’t know if this is a true story. I can’t find any news article on this after doing some searches. All I found were blogs and forums highlighting this video. It’s strange that their local papers didn’t report this though.

You Are Never Truly Anonymous Online

A few weeks ago, a female blogger received an email threat. The perpetrator threatened to kidnap her from her office and later gang rape her. Shaken and unsure if all that was just a sick joke, the victim made a police report together with the printed emails and IP addresses of the perpetrator.

Just a few days ago, the victim reported that the perpetrator was caught by the police. It turned out that the emails were sent out by a group of college kids. Due to the fact that all emails were sent using the same computer, the guy who owned the computer was held responsible.

The police asked her if she wanted to press charges or to let him go. The boy’s father called up the victim to beg her not to press charges against the boy for it will destroy his future. In the end, she let him off the hook after requesting a letter of apology.

This story proves that no one is completely anonymous online. You will get caught even when you are not using your regular email address. Most (if not all) ISP keeps a record that shows which IP address was used by a particular account at any given time frame.

When you have crossed the line, prepare to face the music. Remember, comment sensibly or don’t at all.

Singapore Trip Day 2: Food, Butt Naked And Scenery

UPDATE: This post contains some corrections. Thanks to hanneng for pointing them out.

We were supposed to have buffet lunch with my cousin’s in-laws on that afternoon at 12pm. It will take us almost an hour to reach there by bus. After the mouth-watering supper and a 30 minute exercise the night before, we only managed to wake up around 10.30am that morning. Needless to say, we were late.

I don’t remember the restaurant’s name (actually, I didn’t even bothered to know at that time). I found the photo below in my collection of the Singapore trip photos. After doing some searching, I found out that the place is called Town Restaurant and it is located in the Fullerton Hotel just beside the Singapore river.

Town Restaurant at Fullerton Hotel

The place was fantastic and the food great. I went back and forth from my table to the food counters at least 5 times. I didn’t take much photos of the food. I do not want my cousin’s in-laws to think that I am from some kampung and have never seen such food in my life, do I?

Assorted meat and vege

Assorted seafood

Assorted desserts

More desserts

We could even make our own ABC for dessert! Sadly they do not have cendol.

Ice slicer machine to make ABC

Self made ABC

My stomach was bloated when I finally decided that I would stop going to the food counters anymore. To be honest, there was still space left for more ;-) Anyway, I went outside to have a look at the surrounding sceneries. The tallest building in the photo below (Swissotel The Stamford) is where the wedding dinner will be held on the next day, that’s if I remembered correctly.

Happy 50th Anniversary of Independence Day Malaysia!

I got the video I Love My Country Negarakuku (I hope the translation is correct — I can’t read Mandarin) from Freethinker’s post. Barely 24 hours after posting it up on YouTube, the video had over 18,000 views and 190 comments.

Just like its previous video, the latest speaks of his views on the problems situation in Malaysia:

  • Police and “tea/coffee”
  • The different treatment between races
  • Government officers offering lousy service
  • How difficult for certain race to enter local university
  • and some others…(that I deem too sensitive for my chicken heart to blog about and some which I don’t understand :-P )

The music is a nice mix of rap and Malaysia’s national anthem. He ended the video with the message, “please don’t sue me, saya takde duit…”. I don’t think he need to worry being sued. If I were him, I would worry more of being abducted by UFOs.

I strongly propose that he sing this song for our 50th anniversary of independence day. That would definitely rock, wouldn’t it? Enjoy the video.
