Alonso With His Controversial Pole Position

Yesterday’s Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying saw one of Formula One’s most controversial incident after Monaco 2006 where Michael Schumacher “parked” his Ferrari at the last corner at the dying seconds of qualifying. There seems to be two group of supporters — one who blames Hamilton for the whole incident and another accusing Alonso for deliberately holding up Hamilton for over 10 seconds in the pits.

The latest report indicated that Ron Dennis is blaming Hamilton for the controversial pit lane incident after ignoring instructions from the team to allow Alonso to pass him during the start of Q3. So, is it really Hamilton’s fault? Or has Alonso messed up and Ron Dennis is just covering up for him and the team?

Firstly, it was reported that Ron Dennis had hard words with Alonso’s personal physiotherapist at the end of qualifying. It is also “alleged by media sources that Alonso had only vacated his pit box after a furtive signal from the physio”.

Secondly, a driver’s “signal” to leave the pit box comes from the lollipop man. If the team wants to hold the driver back for a certain period, the message will be radioed over to the lollipop man. It was evident that the lollipop man raised the lollipop after holding up Alonso for a few seconds. However, Alonso didn’t move until 10 seconds later.

This is a disgusting sight to me. Even though 7 time world champion Michael Schumacher has had his own controversial moments, he was also penalized for some of them. One of them was in Monaco 2006 where he received a 10 place penalty for his deliberate action. Therefore, I strongly think that Alonso deserves some kind of penalty for his unsportsmanlike behaviour.

Ron Dennis is probably blaming Hamilton to avoid Alonso from getting a penalty for his actions. If the recent spy controversy involving McLaren has not done enough damage, they must have successfully wrecked their credibility with this incident. This is Formula One at its “best” for you. Enjoy it!
