Streamyx Cuts Off Internet Connection When BitComet Is Running

It has been a long time since the last time I downloaded torrent files. It is another great way of sharing files through P2P. There’s a variety of things that people are sharing (be it legal or not) such as movies, videos, mp3s, games and software.

The problem arises when our internet connection is throttled. From what I’ve read in the past, the connection speed is controlled so that you do not exceed a certain download/upload speed. This usually happens when a user is sharing torrents files. For example, your connection may be able to serve up to 70kbps but when you are torrenting it could drop to 30-40kbsp.

Even though I’m quite annoyed by the fact that my download speed could have been throttled, I am more irritated by the fact that my internet connection was cut off when I’m running BitComet. Without fail, the connection will live no longer than 15 or so minutes before it drops off. I will have to restart the modem every time this happens.

I’ve just tried out utorrent and my internet connection was never cut off even after an hour of use. One disadvantage of utorrent is that the download speed seems to be a lot slower than of BitComet (+/- 15kbps vs +/- 30kbps). Just to prove that Streamyx drops my line when BitComet is in use, I ran the program and my connection was dropped almost immediately after that.

I know of another program, TuoTu which seems to be quite fast. However, it’s in Mandarin and I can’t understand a word of it. Any suggestions on a program to use?

      I have all 3. To say the least, it can’t be conclusive to say which would “help”.

      It’s more towards where the source is, some which are fast, will be fast… slow will be slow over all progs… usually after 10pm..speed will generally be more lively.

      I have no problem catching up Drive Of Live with a pick up speed of ETA 3 hours…

      my advice? cancel streamyx and apply for 3G.

      get a pcmcia card for 3g and you can go online as long as the area has ’service’.

      it’s cheaper than streamyx if you don’t use the sim account to make calls, plus it’s faster too.

      Hmmm…I’ve used BitComet in the past and it was good. It’s quite fast now but Streamyx drops my line after a few minutes of running it (sometimes less). It’s getting annoying. utorrent works fine, with some occasional drop but a lot better than bitcomet.

      @Freethinker
      Not sure why but it seems like running on utorrent is slower to me. I’ve compared them one right after the other. Anyway, as long as the line is stable, I don’t mind waiting a little longer for it.

      Not sure if my area has 3G. I’ll go find out. Thanks for the info! :-)

      Bitcomet uses more connection than utorrent, base on my experience. To prevent this to happen, you can set your client to use less connection per torrent, and disable DHT altogether. This may help a little, but in the end, this issue is usually the modem or router problem.

      Certain modem or router sucks at handling multiple connection. My Linksys WRT54G is one of it. Whenever I launch uTorrent, everyone in the network disconnected. However, I manage to solve the problem by using DDWRT firmware, which works wonder.

      Yeah, I read at the utorrent website saying that some Linksys is having issues with the software. When I did my internship in PJ some time back, I had no problem downloading at 70+kbps using BitComet. That’s why I’m not sure why I’m having problems now.

      Hi, did you solve the bitcomet problem?

      I’m having the same problem (streamyx cut off) after i installed my new wireless router (aztech DSL-605-EW)..

      But everything is working fine with my old aztech DSL-600-E (just that it’s little bit slow)..

      @JL
      Nope. I switched to utorrent instead. Although it is slightly slower than bitcomet. The max I get from utorrent is only 20+ kb/s download. I could reach up to 40+ to 50 with bitcomet but utorrent is more stable.

      Which version utorrent are you using?
      my latest version of utorrent causes the same problem :(

      im also like you guys experiencing the exact same problem…
      im going to try linux though and see if the same thing happens…
      *sigghhhhh

      but do let me know before i destroy this 605 wireless modem…

      I am using 1.7.5.

      I had the same symptom. To be more specific, it was the Aztech DSL605EW router modem hung after run BitComet, but not Steamyx cutoff internet connection.
      I spent half a day to try on NAT/Firewall configuration, but without success. Finally this was resolved by upgraded to the latest firmware build 019.

      Edwiniw, you were saying your problem was resolved by upgraded to the latest firmware build 019, i don’t quite understand, is it a upgrade to windows or to the Aztech DSL605EW ??
