Safety Measures To Follow During A Blackout
Posted by Chan Kelwin in Interesting Findings, PersonalThere were two blackouts in my town last month. It was terribly hot and I tried not to move around too much. That is why I tried to sleep as much as I could during the blackouts. We used torch lights to help us see in the dark. Some houses fortunate enough to have generators were able to generate electricity to switch on their lights and fans.
I did notice some houses using candle lights instead of torch lights. This should be avoided because lighting up candles increases the risk of a fire breakout. Below is a list of safety tips to follow during a blackout provided by the American Red Cross.
- Only use a flashlight for emergency lighting. Never use candles!
- Turn off electrical equipment you were using when the power went out.
- Avoid opening the refrigerator and freezer.
- Do not run a generator inside a home or garage.
- If you use a generator, connect the equipment you want to power directly to the outlets on the generator. Do not connect a generator to a home’s electrical system.
- Listen to local radio and television for updated information.
There are other useful tips as well such as how you can prepare yourself before a blackout happens, proper method to use a generator and how to avoid blackouts by conserving energy. Prepare yourself in case you experience a blackout. I hope I won’t be experiencing another blackout anytime soon.
