Few years back when Ferrari was dominating the entire Formula One field at the hands of Michael Schumacher, people are complaining that it is getting boring. However, the recent events regarding McLaren spying on Ferrari (which has been proven) has caused me to lose interest in this year’s championship.
The McLaren team has been fined $100 million for spying on Ferrari. They have also been stripped off all constructors’ points. The latest news is that McLaren may be banned from participating in the 2008 championship if their 2008 racecar is found to have been influenced by the spy data obtained illegally.
What about the drivers? Shouldn’t their points be stripped off as well? There have been debates on this. Some do not agree that the drivers should be penalized, since it was the team’s fault and not theirs. However, the drivers have had an unfair advantage over their rivals through the illegally obtained information from the Ferrari camp. Therefore, they made not have had as many points as they do now.
There are other situations where the drivers may be penalized due to the team’s fault. I believe this is a similar situation and that the drivers should lose all their points as well. If they are unhappy about it, just blame it on their team.
Whether or not the McLaren drivers lose their points, this year’s championship is as good as crap. One of the Ferrari drivers could have been leading the championship now if McLaren did not have the spy materials. On the other hand, penalizing them would mean that a Ferarri driver would have won the championship through legal means and not on circuit.
Conclusion? It is a crappy championship.
