Almost Lost RM300 To A Police Summons

It is around 4.30 in the morning now. I just got back from a late night supper. When I was on the way home, the road is almost empty. I was approaching the final traffic light that I have to cross before reaching home. The traffic light was red at that time. There were no other cars on the road except mine and another car probably 100 meters behind me.

I did something that no law abiding driver should do — step on the gas when the red light is on.

I saw the car behind me followed my lead by jumping the traffic light as well. I thought to myself, “See. No one in their right mind would wait for the traffic light when there is not even a single soul on the road.” A second later, my surrounding was flashing with blue light.

Niamah! Police!

I stopped by the side of the road shaking my head. What rotten luck am I having? Another few hundred meters and I will reach my home.

The police came to my side of the window and asked my IC and driving license. He passed it to his partner and the other guy went into the car while checking for something. The police started asking me the “normal questions” like:

  1. Do you know what fault have you done? Yes, but…
  2. Where were you from? Late night supper.
  3. Where are you going now? Home.
  4. What are you working as? “Helper”
  5. Whose car is this? Dad’s.
  6. Do you have enough money to pay for the summons? Yes.
  7. Where were you born? Are you Sabahan/Sarawakian? Why is your name like that? (I am asked questions like these due to my name. I am quite used to it really)

I was trying to buy my way out of the mess by arguing that there were no other cars on the road. He replied me saying that there is no such law that allows a driver to jump a traffic light when no other cars are around. He was right and I had nothing else to say. He asked me to open the boot and I did, stepping out from the car to assist him.

That is when his partner joined us and asked me questions #4 and #5 again. I wonder if these are their standard questions. In the midst of the discussion, there were “if you were summoned, can you pay the fine?” and “we are just trying to help”.

Of course, I replied, “What to do? If you guys summon me I will have to pay lah.”

After a while, they returned my IC and driving license and let me off because “this is my first offense”. Thank you very much.

KowTow To Me! Recipient of The Longest Comment Ever!

Having an open comment system and blogging about Malaysia (the good, the bad and the ugly) is like having a time bomb implanted in your body. You have no idea when the time will run out and you will end up in a million and one pieces scattered all around the place within a 50 meters radius.

Ok, I may have exaggerated the whole scenario a little. Ok, maybe a lot.

On a serious note, the risk of someone leaving a seditious comment in your blog that may bring you trouble is real. There is no way of telling when that freakin’ idiot will come along. If he does and you are not prepared…buh-bye.

The longest comment I have ever got

Just a while ago, I was shocked when I received the longest comment that I have ever seen. I thought it was spam at first but spam comments are never that long. Then I thought I just had myself a die hard fan who loved what I wrote thus replying in a longwinded comment. However, I realized that cows had more chance climbing a tree than me having a fan.

Anyway, I checked with Microsoft Word and the comment was 3,564 words long. I don’t think I will read a post/article with 3,000 words (unless it’s darn interesting), let alone a seditious comment. I didn’t fully read the entire comment. I just scanned the post and notice that it was about some “ultra-sensitive-no-one-should-ever-discuss-or-bring-up” kind of issues.

I did a last minute search before posting this up and found that the comment I received was once published in Malaysia Today. Most part of the comment is the same but there are some additions here and there. I have no idea who is behind this but leaving a link to the source would have been enough. However, I have no idea what is the connection between the comment and my post about the Malaysian minister planning to sue YouTube.

Such a waste of my time.

Lewis Hamilton Failed To Win

I couldn’t believe my eyes. Lewis Hamilton could have sealed the driver’s championship in the Chinese GP. Instead, he didn’t even finish the race after his McLaren was beached at the gravel trap right before the pit entrance.

If my memory do not fail me (lack of sleep), his tires were so worn out that he was driving a few seconds slower than Alonso for at least 2 to 3 laps. Why didn’t his team call him in for a tire change? There were others who have pitted a few laps earlier to change onto dry tires. They could have done the same thing but they didn’t. When Hamilton finally headed towards the pits, it was already too late.

I have no idea whose fault this is — the McLaren team or Hamilton’s. Hamilton had a 12 point lead ahead of Alonso. He didn’t even need to win this GP to win the driver’s championship. Winning the driver’s championship in style is not everything. What matters is to win it. If Hamilton fails to become the world championship in the Brazilian GP in two weeks time, he has no one to blame except himself.

I have my own predictions and speculations on who will win the driver’s championship and why. I am too tired to blog about that now. If you are interested, stay tuned.

Protected By Law But Life May Still Be Threatened

There are some recent news that caught my attention. There are serious ones like in the case of Tee Hui Yi, who have just undergone two heart transplants. It highlighted the inadequate numbers of organ donors in Malaysia. I don’t want to go into that since I am not registered as an organ donor myself.

On the other hand, there are “funny” ones like the one where two Styrofoam keris were held up in the air by Heah Tick Lai during Gerakan Youth’s annual meeting. As reported by Malaysiakini:

“I wave this pair of keris here not to fight or challenge anyone… I hope next time Hishammuddin will hold and shout ‘unity for all Malaysians’,” he said.

Well, as long as no keris is used to “bathe in any liquid”, I have no problem with it.

Then there is the article on how whistleblowers are protected by law and that they should step forward to assist in investigation without any worries. It also stated that the Anti Corruption Act guarantees that their identity will not be revealed. If the Lingam tape recording is genuine, I salute the person who recorded and/or exposed the tape. It either takes real courage or stupidity to do that.

Quoting TheStar:

He (Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) told a press conference after being interviewed by the ACA that the whistleblowers feared for their lives as those implicated in the video include a powerful judge, top corporate figure and an influential politician.

Anwar said while ACA had said it was willing to protect the identity of the source, but it could not guarantee the personal safety of these whistleblowers because that is not within its ambit of power.

This reminds me of those police and gangster movies. When someone knows too much or have betrayed their boss, they are put to sleep. However, those scenes will only happen in movies, right? It does not happen in real life, right?

Nikon D40x RSP At RM2,688

I checked the official Nikon Malaysia website and notice that the retail selling price (RSP) of the Nikon D40x is currently at RM2,688. I wonder why the shop in Kuantan I went the other day quoted me around RM2,800. It must have been the old RSP.

Nikon D40x retail selling price at RM2,688

I went into one of the shops in Digital Mall, PJ the other day. I think the name of the shop is Leos Com Trading. The guy asked for RM2,700 for the following items.

  1. Nikon D40x Kit
  2. 2GB memory card
  3. Tripod
  4. Nikon sling bag
  5. 1 year International warranty

I am still looking else where that can give me a better deal. Is there an LCD protector for the Nikon D40x? I am planning to ask him to give that to me free as well :-P If I am not able to reduce the price anymore, at least I am able to get more items for that price.

Are there any other items that I can/should ask for free? Once I get my hands on my PayPal funds, I will be off to the shop :-D
