Yes, it is official. I am a proud owner of a Nikon D40x. I bought it at Lowyat last Friday. I went in every single store that sells Nikon digital cameras and asked for the cheapest price they can offer me. After weighing the pros and cons of each offer, I decided to buy from ENATA DIGITAL.

ENATA DIGITAL is the second shop (if I am not mistaken) on the left as you enter Lowyat from BB Plaza. I was served by a guy named Andy. I can’t help but to notice his ridiculous long eye lashes. Besides that, he is a really nice guy who has helped me in purchasing my first dslr. Below is the list of things I got with the purchase.
- Nikon D40x Kit with AF-S DX 18-55mm lens
- 2GB SD Card (Toshiba)
- JENOVA DSLR camera bag
- STEINZEISER SZ-88 tripod
- LCD protector

I also got two vouchers for Fotokem’s Fotobuk offer. It is a 20-page 6″ X 8″ photo album that we can customize with our photos. You can create the photo album using their software. There is no limit on the number of photos that you can fit in. You just need to decorate the photos for each page and they will print it out for you.
The Fotobuk costs RM59.90. The first voucher entitles me for a FREE Fotobuk and is valid for two months only. The second voucher offers a 30% discount and is valid for three months.
The cash price was RM2,450. I am not good at bargaining so I am quite sure you can further reduce the price if you are good at it. I bought the camera using credit card on a 12 month installment package. In the end, it cost me RM2,550 for the camera (bank charges included). I will need to pay RM210+ for the next 12 months for it. I say it’s worth it.
Actually, there is another shop that is willing to sell me the camera for RM2,450 (12 month installment). It is just a few shops away. The sign board indicates that it is a Digi shop but they are also selling cameras in it. I end up buying from ENATA DIGITAL because they gave me more confidence.
The Digi shop has a poster outside their shop that advertised the Nikon D40x was selling for RM2,399. So, it is possible to get the digital SLR for under RM2,400. You will just need to bargain your way to it.
After playing with the camera a bit, one of the major disadvantages I notice is the lack of zoom. My old Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ3 had a 12X optical zoom that makes my new 18-55 lens feel like a kindergarten boy. I am already thinking of getting a 200mm VR lens. That will cost me around RM1,400 I think. A macro lens would cost another RM1K.
Shit. This new hobby is getting expensive.

welcome to the world of one lense after another… hahah!
i started off with the kit 18-135mm for my d80, then got a 50mm f/1.8, then sold the kit lense off to get a 17-50mm f/2.8, then added another 18-200mm VR.
Wow. That’s cheap. About a month ago, it was around RM2,600, complete with bag, tripod and 2gb card.
Welcome to the SLR money sucking world.
I’d be hesitant to use the tripod if I were you. Those aren’t really designed for the heavy SLR, you don’t want your RM 2k+ jatuh..
woo.. welcome to the DSLR world!
Shoot more photos and share, i am also beginner..
all the time i am still using my 18-135mm with D80, sell it like paul tan, no way.. coz i am still learning to use that len well…
first len i bought is 50mm f/1.8.. the cheapest len that i can afford..
Wow!!
Congrats on the DSLR purchase! I still have to consider the cost involved in this new hobby. Hehehe…
Anyway, hope you enjoy it!
@Paul Tan
Hahaha. That is a nice set of lenses. I am still thinking what lens to get next — a macro or a 18-200mm. I hate the feeling of losing 12x optical zoom (my old camera) and get stuck with a +/- 3x zoom with my kit lens. At the same time, I would love to explore macro photography. *sigh* All need money. LOL.
@Hafiz
Yeah, I guess the price dropped. However, some places sell more expensive while others cheaper. I was quoted RM2,700 when I visited a shop in digital mall, PJ just a few weeks ago.
@KY
Thanks man. Wah, you are scaring me now. That is a 5 feet tripod and feels quite solid though. I hope it won’t be that bad as long as no one knocks onto it?
@np
Yeah, I plan to create a flickr account for that. I am still recovering from my “mood swing”. Been feeling tired and lazy lately. I need to get out more often I guess.
@Angie Tan
Thanks. Yeah, it’s a nice hobby but can turn out to become quite expensive. Wanna join us? hehe.

i am also shopping around for a DSLR and now i am torn between nikon D40x and Canon 400D -_-”. Both specs seem to be the same. How did you decide to get the D40x ? I am still a noob and i have no idea how to decide besides looking at the price point of view
@satkuru
Well, I did some research and reading. Since the two cameras are different brand, you really should look at the bigger picture. You are not just buying a Nikon D40x or Canon 400D but the whole range of other products that they have to offer — lens, filters, speedlight, etc.
From what I’ve read, the Nikon D40x gives a better grip and feel compared to its Canon competitors. Lens and other upgrades may be slightly cheaper as well. Another reason why I went for the Nikon is that I notice more bloggers and pro photographers that I know of are using Nikon as well. It can never be wrong to follow the crowd
If you don’t mind buying second hand items like lens from others, you may want to check out ShutterAsia to see which brands have more second hand items to offer.
Having said that, it’s up to your own preference. Go to the shop, hold the cameras in your hands and play with them. See which one gives you that comfortable and feel good factor, then go for it. Also, you may want to ask someone who has been playing with a DSLR longer than myself. LOL.

Nikon D90…
Apparently Ansel Adams was not a fan of the technique called bracketing. He said, \’The ‘machine-gun’ approach to photography – by which many negatives are made with the hope that one will be good – is fatal to serious results.\’…
Hello everybody,
I am a new owner and a beginner in this nikon DSLR but I am already feeling the money-sucking world that you guys mentioned. I just bought a refurbished unit - Nikon D40x body(RM900) and AF-S DX 18-135mm lenses(RM650), all bought separately through ebay and still looking for a ‘cheap’ Sb600 to complete the basic unit. And I am already thinking of buying many other accessories !! After spending close to RM 2000 on everything ( the shipping alone cost me RM 200 ), then only I realised that I could get the basic set up for RM 2500 - RM 2700 over here in KL. But then the lense is still the main issue here. I found the unit in good condition but I am planning to send for service so that I will feel better .
Any suggestions or places that I could try send it to?
