Hello everybody,
I am a new owner and a beginner in this nikon DSLR but I am already feeling the money-sucking world that you guys mentioned. I just bought a refurbished unit - Nikon D40x body(RM900) and AF-S DX 18-135mm lenses(RM650), all bought separately through ebay and still looking for a 'cheap' Sb600 to complete the basic unit. And I am already thinking of buying many other accessories !! After spending close to RM 2000 on everything ( the shipping alone cost me RM 200 ), then only I realised that I could get the basic set up for RM 2500 - RM 2700 over here in KL. But then the lense is still the main issue here. I found the unit in good condition but I am planning to send for service so that I will feel better .
Any suggestions or places that I could try send it to?

@satkuru
Well, I did some research and reading. Since the two cameras are different brand, you really should look at the bigger picture. You are not just buying a Nikon D40x or Canon 400D but the whole range of other products that they have to offer -- lens, filters, speedlight, etc.

From what I've read, the Nikon D40x gives a better grip and feel compared to its Canon competitors. Lens and other upgrades may be slightly cheaper as well. Another reason why I went for the Nikon is that I notice more bloggers and pro photographers that I know of are using Nikon as well. It can never be wrong to follow the crowd :-) If you don't mind buying second hand items like lens from others, you may want to check out ShutterAsia to see which brands have more second hand items to offer.

Having said that, it's up to your own preference. Go to the shop, hold the cameras in your hands and play with them. See which one gives you that comfortable and feel good factor, then go for it. Also, you may want to ask someone who has been playing with a DSLR longer than myself. LOL.

@Paul Tan
Hahaha. That is a nice set of lenses. I am still thinking what lens to get next -- a macro or a 18-200mm. I hate the feeling of losing 12x optical zoom (my old camera) and get stuck with a +/- 3x zoom with my kit lens. At the same time, I would love to explore macro photography. *sigh* All need money. LOL.

@Hafiz
Yeah, I guess the price dropped. However, some places sell more expensive while others cheaper. I was quoted RM2,700 when I visited a shop in digital mall, PJ just a few weeks ago.

@KY
Thanks man. Wah, you are scaring me now. That is a 5 feet tripod and feels quite solid though. I hope it won't be that bad as long as no one knocks onto it?

@np
Yeah, I plan to create a flickr account for that. I am still recovering from my "mood swing". Been feeling tired and lazy lately. I need to get out more often I guess.

@Angie Tan
Thanks. Yeah, it's a nice hobby but can turn out to become quite expensive. Wanna join us? hehe.
