Warning:

This is a TRUE story. This post contains graphic images. You have been warned.

Note: Names of mentioned individuals are changed to protect their identity.

My friend, Paula is in her mid-twenties. She is a victim of two snatch thieves. Both this events happened in a period of only 6 months.

The first time when Paula encountered a snatch thief, only her handbag was snatched away. She saw the person fled in a motorbike. Apart from losing her handbag and the things in it, she was not hurt.

We know too well how some snatch thief victims end up with cuts, bruises and even deaths. In a sense, she was lucky.

Unfortunately, her luck ran out last Friday morning. She encountered her second snatch thief incident. Whoever said lightning does not strike twice? In her case, it did. In fact, the second strike was much worse than the first.

We received a phone call from her boyfriend, Simon that afternoon. We were in shock when we received the news. Upon reaching the hospital, Simon told us what he knew.

Paula was walking towards the LRT station when it happened (just like the first time). Three passers-by found her lying by the roadside. She was unconscious and bleeding heavily at the back of her head. They sent her to the nearest hospital.

Thankfully, her mobile phone was still with her. Or else, they would not have been able to contact anyone since she was unconscious. They called the first number on the dialled numbers list and got Simon on the line.

Simon told us how shocked he was when the nurse showed him the clothes soaked in blood presumably used to apply pressure on Paula’s wound. The nurse shook her head (left to right). From the amount of blood and the nurse’s gesture, he prepared for the worst.

In the end, it was not as bad as what he had imagined. Paula was very much alive, thankfully, albeit very pale and weak. The doctor did a CT scan and the results came out positive. She suffered no internal injuries to the head apart from the cut and a one or two inches scratch wound on the forehead. Her cut received four or five stitches.

You should have noticed by now that the title does not match with the story I have told this far. The truth is that my friend is very much alive now. Thank God for that. I hope neither of them are pantang and would get angry with me for saying otherwise.

I did so because I felt that it would give a stronger impact to the ones reading this than to use a title like “My Friend Could Have Died Last Friday Morning“. If anyone of you reading up to this point feels cheated or angry, I hope that I can make it up to you with this news below.

I was told that two other patients admitted earlier are snatch thief victims as well. One of them was discharged earlier that day. The second one was not as lucky. The patient was in a coma for a few days and passed away the day before.

We chatted for quite a while in the observation ward. We had more questions than answers because Paula could not remember what had happened. She only had vivid memories of being in the car and the next thing she knows, she is already in the hospital.

Then we started discussing how to prevent such incidents from happening again. The usual “advices” such as:

“Don’t use the same path”
“Don’t go out the same time”
“Bring an umbrella with you”
“Be aware of your surroundings”

I chipped in my two cents as well. However, it was after a day or two after thinking about the whole situation that I realized how “silly” we were.

When we talk about rape victims, it has to be their dressing, over-friendliness, foolishness, etc. When we talk about snatch victims, it has to be them not equipped with an umbrella, not fully aware of the surroundings, using the same path each day, etc.

Have you wondered why it is always the victims fault?

Why can’t the people in power do something about it? Are crimes such as rape and snatch thief petty issues to those in power? The fact is that our streets are no longer safe.

It is only natural for crime rates to increase as the economy deteriorates. If it is true that our economy is still stable now, according to some minister, what would happen when the economy turns bad next year as some predicted? What are the people in power doing about it?

It is really unfortunate that the people in power seem to be more interested in dispersing peaceful gatherings without a permit, punching and throwing chairs in a meeting, calling each others names like dinosaur, big monkey and Bigfoot, emphasizing how little they spend on business trips, taking over the government and whatnot.

The truth is that I do not give two hoots about any of those mentioned anymore. They can buy a dozen toy remote controlled helicopters for RM2 billion each for all I care.

What I want is that my parents do not need to worry sick about my safety when I am walking down the street. On top of that, I do not want to be worried sick about my family and friends’ safety when they are walking down the street.

Just how difficult can that be?

I know. From how things are, it seems like an impossible task. I know.

I did a quick search at Google and found some interesting articles. Definitely worth reading.

Videos capturing events of snatch thief occurrences in Malaysia.

********************

The reason for this (very long) write-up is that my friend would like to have as many people know about this incident. They even called the press and their story was published in China Press Sunday edition and another Malay newspaper. Of course, I don’t think their intention is to have 30 seconds of fame moment. Instead, I believe they too want to feel safe walking down any street without fear of a third strike.

My girlfriend immediately looked at me saying, “Why don’t you write this in your blog? Then more people will know about it.”

I replied, “Honey. I do have the (Internet) connection(s) but I am just dirt in cyberspace. No one will listen to me.”

    Make it a habit to “Bring an umbrella with you” , rain or shine.

    (a)It is a good self defense tool as it sight deters troubles.
    ‘Not the foldable ones’ as it is not an effective tools for
    self-defense.

    (b)Wear a loose leather belt for use as self defense.

    If you take up taekwondo, you will know that (a) & (b) above tools are useful instruments to keep would be attackers and snatch thieves at a safe distance.

    You think snatch thieves dare to approach a group of girls with dozen of long umbrellas. Remember how fencing works ?

    It may look unfashionable & sissy to use a long umbrella on sunny days, but it makes you feel safe ,shady & cool by its appearance.

    Girls in the 1960s to 1980s eras used them as part of their attires.
    I rarely heard of snatch thieves cases in those days.

    Let’s just say do not leave your house without a long ” Umbrella” !
    I always carry the long pointed metal frame type . If not the mixed plastic - metal types will do.

    I am a Guy, and I do carry an expensive metal piece umbrella, rain or shine. I wear a belt for self defense for many years and found it useful as a defense tool. I treated it as a fashion of the 21st century.

    Remember ‘John Steele ‘ in the Avengers ? He wears a metal hat too !

    Our police force is so busy trying to arrest people while singing Negara-ku instead of going after the real criminals… This is truly Malaysia Boleh!

    Oh yeah, our police are also so scared that they had to close down a police beat…

  3. 3POINT8 says:

    The police force could actually IF msia increase tax and cut all subsidies on oil, further impose on national service, build less infrastructures and decreasing the amount of immigrants. Sure every minister will get a copter out of it, but hey, given that situation, there is no excuse on why they shouldn’t increase funding on social safety, is there?

    Then again, we wouldn’t want to live like north koreans do we?

    And i’m certain there is a better solution. Only if someone is willing to spend the effort looking for that solution and implement it.

  4. Allan says:

    My condolences to you & to her family. :(

  5. Allan says:

    Wait I take that back…. I’m sorry I already left a comment before reading it because I was so sad by the title. At least she’s in a good condition now. :)

  6. Lisa says:

    This is bad. Now Malaysia is not a safe place to be.

    I have heard numerous incidents that happened like your friend’s case. Some are lucky but some are not.

    3 years ago, one of my friend’s gf got caught up in the snatch thieves as well, where a bike went passed her and snatched her sling bag. Because its a sling bag, she was pulled and over-thrown to the other side of the road hitting her head pretty badly. She bleed profusely and her whole body shook of shock symptoms…

    took her to hospital and got sticches but found there is some blood clot in her brain. her family do not want to have surgery and js asked the doctor to prescribe medication to clear it off… (yes luckily there are choices as her condition is not that bad with the clot not in important areas) … it took her almost a year to get well without headaches and some ability to think or remember. She is changed afterwards. She was once a very happy go lucky girl. But now she has become more of a serious person.

    Hope that Malaysia will do something about this soon :(

    All we want is peace in where we stay.

    Gals used to be victim of snatch thieves. But, right now, everyone is not safe … including guys.

    I was robbed by three snatch thieves earlier this year. Was pushed into a dark lane,beaten and then robbed. I manage to pull myself away from them after much struggle. Or else, :(

    What a scary experience…

    May all of us be well and safe then ^.^

    @Why Cares
    Arming yourself with an umbrella seems to be one of the most popular advices people give to snatch thief victims and those who want to prevent from becoming one. Unfortunately, I doubt it may help much, if any at all. Just take a look at the videos above.

    In my friend’s case, she didn’t even know what hit her. She didn’t even noticed or heard any motorbike before she fainted. All she remembered was waking up in the hospital.

    I honestly don’t think the belt idea will work at all. These snatch thief incidents happened faster than you can blink an eye. Still got time to unbuckle your belt?

    @Angie Tan
    The image of the police force has been thrown in the drain lately. I’ve heard from the neighbors how it is of “no use” to report such incidents to the police. I’m sure they get many reports in a week, maybe even daily. What are they doing about it? Apart from just recording the victim’s statements?

    @3POINT8
    Seriously with all the money flying in and out, here and there, I doubt much will be allocated to improve anything. Is there any hope left with the current politic situation in Malaysia?

    I am almost at the point where I don’t give a flying-saucer what these people do. As long as I can walk freely on the streets without having to worry for my safety and they don’t burn down this country, I really do not want to bother.

    @Allan
    No problem. She is fine but I worry for the other people whom may fall victim next, if not already.

    @Lisa
    It is definitely not “that” safe in our streets anymore. If only those people in power actually bother to do something about it. They are probably much better off since they have drivers fetching them in their official cars wherever they want to go. Not forgetting the bodyguards they bring along when they walk into some of the darkest streets in Malaysia. How would they ever know how it feels to be one of us walking these streets?

    @Jasonmighty
    No one is safe. Some attack their victims without weapons, these aren’t as bad as those using a knife, parang or stick. Many cases have been reported in the media. Some politicians come out and say this, say that. Is there any improvement at all after that?

    My friends and even their relatives got snatch by thieves a few times in a year..
    It can’t even save your live by wearing a helmet 24 hours..

    What I hated most is those f**king bikers who always ride their bike without helmet, searching all around residential area for a chance..!

    And I always wanted to gather in a group, find some f**kers, let them make their move, make sure that he’s the f**ker, WALL HIM UP!!!

    “I just can’t imagine if our love ones is the victim”

    PS : Wish your friend to recover soon.

  11. Chan Kelwin says:

    @Scud
    I don’t condone violence but to see how some snatch thief victims end up, I wouldn’t feel as bad watching them getting beaten up.

    What we need now is for those people in power to realize that reducing the crime rate is as important as trying to stay (or get) in power. Something I don’t see happening in the near future.

  12. WinsonLee says:

    I know bringing a handbag out is a need for girl as girls has much accessories to be placed in the bag. If you are parking within the shopping centre car park, fair enough that it is safe to use a handbag as you will not see a snatch thieves who ride a motorbike going into the carpark. If you foresee yourself walking along the road, either do not bring a handbag with you or you can always ask your bf to carry the bag for you. Although I do agree that I do not see it appropriate for guys to carry handbag in the shopping centre for their gf, but when comes to the safety of their gf, they would have to.

    No matter how unhappy, reluctant or even angry we are with all these issues, we still lives here. We can’t change what they are doing. We depend or expect the police to arrest all these bastard within a night. As long as poverty is an issue for a country, these issues will just encourage people to steal, rob or even kill just to make sure that they survive. We can’t prevent this from happening. Taking precaution is the only way.

  13. Chan Kelwin says:

    @WinsonLee
    There should be snatch thief cases in car parks as well, no? I don’t think anywhere is completely safe. Now and then, there will be news like these reported in the papers. I really wonder if “they” are doing anything about it. There is no point if these cases are just reported but no action taken to prevent future incidents.

    I totally get what you mean. I recently experienced the same thing except that i was in the car at my own home. I opened my gate to park my car inside, saw two men on the motorcycle. I felt really uncomfortable so i stayed in the car but my gate was still opened. one of them came towards the passenger’s side and crashed my window. took my bag and fled off. i was in shock so didn’t do anything. after few seconds, i ran outside and shouted at them. went back in the car and tried to chase them but that time was peak hour where everybody is on their way back from work. honk at the police car in front of me, but the police dude ignored me. i am still in shock and still afraid that it would happen again. my advise to all the girls, please do not carry handbags. it is advisable that u put everything in your pocket. they wont stop what they do. it’s like an addiction. how i wish im a supergirl….
