Old Habits Die Hard

I just got back from a memorial service that was held to mark the 1st anniversary of the death of my pastor’s wife. There were some food prepared for us after the service but I didn’t eat anything. The food looked great but I was too lazy to queue up. Another reason was that I just wanted to go home to blog and to finish up one of my “homework” that is due tonight. ;-)

This reminded me something that happened when I was a kid. I used to take piano lessons from this “Mr Money”. Some of his students called him that because he has a “Wang” in his name. Once, he told me that he received a card from his student that wrote, “Dear Mr. XXX YYY $$$$”.

Anyway, back to the story. One day, he bought some nice looking mechanical pencils and gave it to some of his students as a gift. I was one of the lucky ones. However, I did not accept the gift. He persuaded me for the next hour or so but I still rejected it at the end. I regretted it later.

A few days later when I was at a bookstore with my mom, I saw the same mechanical pencil and “forced” her to buy it for me. It costs some where between RM7 to RM15. That is damn expensive for a mechanical pencil. I should have just accepted it as a gift at the first place. Why didn’t I? Don’t ask me.

Back to the present time. Do I feel regret not eating at the end of the service? You bet. Now excuse me while I go eat the KFC my mom bought back for me. :-P

I have been tagged by Jys. Since the original tag is to answer the question with one word, I’ll try my best to do it. If the answer doesn’t make sense to you, it is probably because it is 6am right now. I have a few “pending tags” that I haven’t completed. I hope to be able to catch up on them soon.

University Of Malaya Convocation 2007 Photos

As promised, here are some photos I took at the convocation I attended the other day. As usual, there was a large crowd of people. Some of the juniors were holding banners while calling out to their seniors.

If I didn’t tell you these photos were convocation photos and if you couldn’t read Chinese, you might even think it’s a pre-riot gathering or something. Don’t believe me? Below are photos with their “twisted” explanation at the bottom of each photo.

UM convo people holding banners

A large group of people holding banners.

UM convo crowd holding more banners

A closer look at one of the crowds. Angry mobs from the crowd staring at a passerby (who was strangely dressed in a funny looking outfit). Just look at them. They look so angry they might just start a fight right then.

UM convo more crowd holding banners

The crowd gets larger causing a traffic jam. The people look like they are shouting while holding up a banner with a dragon. You can see the fear in the uncle’s face (bottom left) as he walks away from the place.

UM convo crowd causing traffic jam

Massive traffic jam, again with a strange person wearing a silly outfit in the photo.

UM convo orange vs black crowd

Two groups of really angry looking people — orange vs. black.

UM convo man holding a stick

Things started to heat up. One guy from the black team holding a stick wanting to beat up some guy.

UM convo a group tossing a guy into the air

They started tossing people up into the air out of frustration. Strangely, a group of people is happily taking photos at the foreground.

UM convo a group tossing a girl into the air

Damn brutal — even girls were not spared.

A few more photos and maybe a video coming up.

One Day Trip To UM For Convo

I had a busy day yesterday. It is almost 5am now and I haven’t slept yet. I am working on something and will reveal it soon.

I will be going to KL in three hours time by bus. Yeah, by bus. I hope the driver isn’t on any “horse pills”. I need and want to arrive at my destination safely. I will be attending my gf’s convo :-) and I haven’t even packed my things yet. If possible, I would like to take a short nap too. I will be back tonight.

I am sorry that I have not replied to some of your comments. I will reply them tonight or tomorrow. I will try to get a few photos to put up in here. Be right back…

Safety Measures To Follow During A Blackout

There were two blackouts in my town last month. It was terribly hot and I tried not to move around too much. That is why I tried to sleep as much as I could during the blackouts. We used torch lights to help us see in the dark. Some houses fortunate enough to have generators were able to generate electricity to switch on their lights and fans.

I did notice some houses using candle lights instead of torch lights. This should be avoided because lighting up candles increases the risk of a fire breakout. Below is a list of safety tips to follow during a blackout provided by the American Red Cross.

  • Only use a flashlight for emergency lighting. Never use candles!
  • Turn off electrical equipment you were using when the power went out.
  • Avoid opening the refrigerator and freezer.
  • Do not run a generator inside a home or garage.
  • If you use a generator, connect the equipment you want to power directly to the outlets on the generator. Do not connect a generator to a home’s electrical system.
  • Listen to local radio and television for updated information.

There are other useful tips as well such as how you can prepare yourself before a blackout happens, proper method to use a generator and how to avoid blackouts by conserving energy. Prepare yourself in case you experience a blackout. I hope I won’t be experiencing another blackout anytime soon.
